The Global Fight Against Human Trafficking: International & Comparative Perspectives

We hosted a reception and program featuring the Consul General of Mexico Remedios Gómez Arnau, the Consul General of Israel Shlomi Kofman, the National Anti-Trafficking Coordinator of Israel Dina Dominitz, and German Consul and Head of Legal Affairs Thomas Floth, as they discussed the global aspects of human trafficking and how their nations fight this horrific crime.

Attendees had the opportunity to mingle with diplomats and fellows in anti-trafficking while enjoying the cuisine of each country and gaining insight into the international nuances of the field.

In 2006, the National Council of Jewish Women collaborated with Jewish Family and Children's Services, New Israel Fund and Jewish Community Relations Council to create The Jewish Coalition to End Human Trafficking (JCEHT) with a goal to broaden the understanding in the Jewish community regarding the crime of human trafficking/modern-day slavery and to work toward its eradication.

On January 19, we gathered together with Jewish community leaders and local government officials and politicians to celebrate the JCEHT's 10 year dedicated work and recognize its founding organizations and activists. For 10 years the Coalition has been advocating on behalf of those trapped in modern-day slavery and educating the community about the need prosecute and punish the traffickers.

At this event we honored the winners of the 2016 Teen Poster and Writing contests. Youth from across the Bay Area will gathered to share experiences in anti-trafficking advocacy and prevention.Youth speakers shared at the event how you can help fight human trafficking in your own back yard and rescue the victims. There were many special performances, including one from the Regent Collective Dance Company from Notre Dame High School.

The Advanced Israeli Model to Fight Human Trafficking: How Israel Joined The Front Runners

At this event, sponsored by the Jewish Coalition to End Human Trafficking, Dr. Shmueli, Israel’s National Anti-trafficking Coordinator, presented about the successful complex of anti-trafficking policies and legislative solutions that lead to the ranking of Israel as one of the leading nations in the global fight against modern-day slavery.  Dr. Andy David, Consul General of Israel to the Pacific Northwest, introduced Dr. Shmueli and addressed the audience.

Co-sponsored by SFCAHT, JCEHT, and the Consulate Generals of Germany, Mexico, and Israel, over 250 people- law enforcement, city officials, non-profit victim service providers, local social justice activists and community members- attended this special reception and program featuring the Consul General of Germany, Stefan Schlueter, the Consul General of Mexico, Dr. Andres Roemer Slomianski, and the Israeli National Anti-Trafficking Coordinator, Dr. Merav Shmueli, as we explored important and fascinating issues such as:
*How are these nations addressing human trafficking in their own countries and what can we learn from their comparative anti-trafficking models? 
*What are the most important international aspects of trafficking here in the Bay Area? 
Mingle with diplomats of Mexico, Germany and Israel while enjoying the cuisine of each country and gaining insight into the international nuances of anti-trafficking.

Film Screening of Not My Life & Panel Presentation

January 13,2016 | Our Lady of the Visitacion Catholic School San Francisco

Inspiring anti-trafficking awareness program of the National Council of Jewish Women San Francisco (NCJWSF) in collaboration with U.S. Fund for UNICEF gathered more than 200 parents, teachers and students at Our Lady of the Visitacion Catholic School San Francisco! Following the screening of Not My Life documentary, NCJWSF Board member, Federal Judge Marianna Warmee, NCJWSF Executive Director, Antonia Lavine and Chandni Jain from U.S. Fund for UNICEF presented about modern day slavery in the Bay Area.

Panel Presentation on Human Trafficking

On behalf of the Jewish Coalition to End Human Trafficking, Jerilyn Gelt, JPAC's Chair and JCRC's Board Member and Antonia Lavine, NCJW San Francisco's Executive Director and San Francisco Collaborative Against Human Trafficking's Coordinator presented in front of a group of 40 Jewish/Israeli professionals in Silicon Valley to raise awareness about human trafficking. After their presentation, followed by a screening of a documentary on the theme of child sex trafficking, Jerilyn and Antonia answered questions from the audience.

For over 15 years, the staff and volunteers of the Hotline for Refugees and Migrants in Israel have been identifying changes and patterns in human trafficking and migration. Tamara Newman brought insight from the Hotline’s work on protecting the rights of refugees, migrant workers, and victims of human trafficking. Download Flyer HERE.

Tamara Newman is the Director of Resource Development at the Hotline for Refugees and Migrants. She made Aliya to Israel from Australia in February 2013 prior to which she worked on the launch of the New Israel Fund in Australia. Hotline for Refugees and Tamara Newman are grantees of NCJW Inc. and New Israel Fund.


Luring Children into Sex Trafficking: Examining Recruitment Tactics Used by Traffickers

JCEHT in collaboration with Shared Hope International presented a panel discussion and screening of “Chosen” (Click HERE for the trailer) to learn about the ways traffickers are recruiting children into sex trafficking, and how to identify and prevent such victimization.

Among the panelists were Laurel Botsford, Shared Hope Ambassador,Cari Herthel, a trafficking survivor, and Sergeant Antonio Flores, SF Police Department's Special Victims Unit.

NCJWSF organized a series of film screenings and panel discussions on human trafficking issues, most recently at Seton Medical Center in collaboration with the Mayor of Daly City, David Canepa. Our featured speakers included: Sally Lieber, Former Pro-Temp Assemblywoman; Sister Caterina Chu, Daughters of Charity; Nancy Goldberg, SFCAHT’s Co-Chair; Marianna Warmee, Federal Administrative Judge, EEOC; and Antonia Lavine, President of NCJWSF and JCEHT Chair. Mayor Canepa presented NCJWSF with a letter of recognition.
